Everyday Peace Blog

Dr. Monica Carrer

Hi, my name is Monica, and I am a researcher and practitioner in the field of peace and conflict studies. I have an interdisciplinary background in the social sciences and I specialize on the micro-level dynamics of conflict and peace.

I am also a mum of two and I must say I have learnt more about peace and conflict through motherhood and real life challenges than any book!

Me as a Practitioner

I am very passionate about people and their potential for building peace in their everyday environments. I love being able to connect deeply with people. While supporting them through their challenges, I also see their incredible resilience. Every person I work with matters to me and I look forward to getting to know you.

Me as a Scholar

I have a broad interdisciplinary background in the social sciences, including politics, international relations, sociology, anthropology, social psychology and gender studies. I have conducted research in a post-conflict environment. This is where I have discovered the powerful potential of ordinary people building peace in their own everyday environments even in times of violent conflict.

Me as a Family Person

I am a mother and a migrant in New Zealand. I have a mixed, international family. I know how it is like to navigate differences, and I know how difficult and emotionally draining it can be to raise children nonviolently. But that’s the thing, my life is not perfect, and so I get the chance to practice what I preach myself, in my own everyday life. I keep reading, learning, changing, trying to do better.
